This residency program focuses on exploring transitional spaces and new relationships between body, nature and the urban landscape of Rio de Janeiro through multi-disciplinary experimental artistic research and projects.
This program is curated by Daniela Labra, Independent curator, writer and critique on contemporary visual arts who lives and works in Berlin and Rio de Janeiro and by Gabriela Maciel, permanent curator of EV_Largo Art Residency; Founder and director of Tech Art Lab.
During one month of this program we will have the participation of the visiting artist & guest critic / advisor Gabi Schillig, Professor for Spatial Design and Exhibition Design at the Berlin University of the Arts.

Gabriela Maciel, Brazil

Gabriela Maciel lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. Artistic co-director and permanent curator of EV / Largo art residency and cultural centre, Rio de Janeiro; Co-curator and embassador of The Wrong New Digital Art Biennale (since 2013); founder and director of Tech Art Lab platform and cultural producer (founded in Brazil in 2011);; has served as curator of the Re_Act Contemporary Art Lab, Azores Archipelago (2017) and of Dotmov Festival Japan – Brazil (2011-2016).
With a special interest in subjects of arts, nature, technology and transdisciplinarity, her recent curatorial works include exhibitions, festivals, art residencies and site-specific projects such as: “Digital Provocateurs” with 14 young digital artists (Cidade das Artes, Rio de Janeiro, 2018); “Still Here?” with European videoartists (LACS, Lisbon 2018); “Matter / Non-matter” group exhibition of Latin American and European contemporary artists the attended the immersion Re_Act in the Archipelago of the Azores, (M.A.H. Daniela Labra, Germany
Daniela Labra lives and works in Berlin and Rio de Janeiro. Independent curator, writer and critique on contemporary visual arts. She is graduated in Theater Theory at Uni-Rio, Rio de Janeiro (1998). She took a MA in Arts at UNICAMP, São Paulo (2005), and a PhD in Art History and Critique at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ (2014). Her thesis International Legitimization of Brazilian Art from 1940-2010, focused on the international narratives of contemporary brazilian visual arts and the stereotyped interpretations over it abroad and inside Brazil. It was warded by the Gilberto Velho Prize for best PhD Thesis in Arts and Humanities at the UFRJ, in 2015. She got a Post-doc grant with the project After the Future: Ruins and reinventions of Modernity in Contemporary Art (2014-2016). She works on projects with an emphasis on performance art and performativity, latinamerican modernities, contemporary brazilian arts, decolonialidad, art and politics.Lecturer of Curating Performance Art and Art and Politics at Node curatorial studies Online. Lecturer in Contemporary Art at Parque Lage Visual Arts School, Rio de Janeiro (2007-2016). Art critique in the newspaper O Globo, Rio de Janeiro (2014-2016). Gabi Schillig, Germany
Gabi Schillig lives and works in Berlin. Studied Architecture in Coburg and completed her postgraduate studies in Conceptual Design at the Städelschule – Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Frankfurt am Main before founding her ‘Studio for Dialogical Spaces’ in Berlin in 2008. Gabi is an artist – Studio for Dialogical Spaces Berlin and Professor at UdK – Berlin University of the Arts. Has exhibited internationally and received several fellowships and prizes, amongst others: Akademie Schloss Solitude Stuttgart (2007 – 2008), Van Alen Institute New York (2009), Nordic Artists´ Centre Dale (2010), Weissenhof (Architekturförderpreis (2010), KHOJ International Artists´ Association Neu-Delhi (2011), Largo das Artes Rio de Janeiro 2015), Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau (2016), Nida Art Colony (2018, 2019) and HIAP Villa Eläintarha Helsinki (2019). From 2012 to 2018 she was teaching as Professor for Spatial Design at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences – Peter Behrens School of Arts and has been the vice chairwoman of the Institute for Research in Applied Arts – IRAA (2015 – 2018). In 2016 she was constituted as a personal tutor by the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship Foundation). In her artistic practice and teaching Gabi Schillig investigates contemporary and future questions of spatial design such as the relationship between space and body, the evolution of spatial systems, the potentials of materiality and the experimental use of analogue and digital design methodologies. Her conceptual approach results in multi-sensorial, dialogical structures and spaces of communication on multiple scales and in different contexts within spaces, cities and landscapes that lead to the emergence of an experimental spatiality, based on social and physical processes and connect materiality and interaction in an immediate way.
